When Is It the Best Time to Divorce for My Children?

The reality is that there is not necessarily a “best” time for your children to find out that you are getting divorced. What works “best” for your family is totally different from one family to the next. It depends on factors such as the age and temperament of your child, your specific family dynamics, and how well you and your spouse can work together for the benefit of your child.

One factor to strongly consider in making this decision is the nature of your relationship with your spouse. For instance, if there is violence going on in your own, or repeated fighting and turmoil, it may be better to divorce sooner rather than later, both for the purposes of safety and a calmer environment for your child.

On the other hand, if you and your spouse have a respectful relationship and just mutually agreed that divorce is the best thing for you, you may decide to postpone your divorce for a certain period of time in order to make it easier for your child. For example, perhaps the wife has traditionally stayed at home with the child, who has not yet reached the age for attending school. If the couple divorces, then the wife is likely to have to reenter the workforce. If the child entering school is an event that will occur in the relatively near future, the couple may simply decide to delay their divorce until their child enters school. Taking this step could prevent the child’s home life from changing all at once, in addition to the stress of the divorce.

Do the right thing for you and your family by getting the legal assistance that you need in this type of situation.
